Never really  thought about it, but after reading this Durarara and AoT are really  good examples, as they have arguably 2 main characters, of different  sex. Durarara while the main male character is pretty bland, Celty is incredibly deep, with a wide range of emotion and  backstory. In AoT you  have Mikasa showing more varied emotion then  Erin (despite the fact she only uses like 2 expressions). You could  then  compare Ryuuko from  kill la kill to Simon  from Gurren laggan.  


Not sure  why...  I assume  it just goes with  what's mentioned  above, guy MC's have to  be either calm  and  collected, or filled with  manly gusto.  If they start out  weak/whiny the only  character development  they're  allowed is to  fill  one of  those roles later. 


Then if you're looking  for side character females who aren't well written you don't have to look very hard  though. You'd  have  a  dramatically  easier time  finding badly written  ones. Though tbf that  goes for  male  side characters as well.

There are exceptions to all of  these  of course, but those exceptions mark  exceptional anime.
