hi aha!
i'm jake elliott; i work with jonCates on a lot of different projects
including the chicago hackmeetings and 0UR080R05 which jon posted on the
ahacamping wiki.
this txt below is a description of a talk that i will be giving at HOPE
in new york next month. actually work related to AHA will play a large
role in this talk as i present it at HOPE; i think it could be refocused
more at ahacamping as a presentation about chicago dirty new media &
artist-hackers, if you folks are interested.
Dirty New Media: Art, Activism and Computer Counter Cultures
------------------------------------------------------------
Speaker: Jake Elliott
Length: 35 minutes + questions/comments
This talk presents a short history of electronic art by illustrating
connections between artists, activists and hackers. The connections
and histories presented include:
- The demoscene and its origins in software piracy.
- Video and conceptual artists in the 1970s and their activist work.
- Contemporary artists working with circuit bending and other
detournements of modern technologies.
- The Chicago 'dirty new media' community; contemporary artists,
hackers and activists creating software+electronic art with a punk/
anticapitalist ethos.
Excerpts of work from these different artists and communities will be
screened and discussed.
This talk is based in part on an essay written by Jake Elliott and
Jon Cates in 2006 for the exhibition catalog 'Pass It On: Connecting
Contemporary Do-It-Yourself Culture.' The original essay is available
online at http://4rtcr4x0rz.com/
