[aha] Live Performers Meeting - Cease and Desist Art

Cari amici di AHA,

ho il piacere di annunciarvi un evento romano che spero possa 
interessarvi ed essere l'occasione di allargare il dibattito sul 
rapporto controverso tra arti visive e copyright.

L'evento si svolgerà durante l'LPM di Roma ed è connesso al progetto 
editoriale del REFF di Salvatore Iaconesi e Oriana Persico, che conterrà 
anche un mio testo critico.
Il mio tentativo è di far emengere quegli artisti disposti a "sporcarsi 
le mani". Coloro che rischiano la proprià libertà con azioni al confine 
o oltre la legalità, anche disposti a rovinarsi la carriera o a 
rischiare la galera.
Dato che non volevo però "martirizzarne" le figure, ho voluto mantenere 
l'immagine dell'artista coerente con un idea di sabotaggio irriverente e 
sbeffeggiante e così ho pensato che una "causa legale" potesse essere 
anche una sorta di "trofeo". Così ho spinto verso il Cease and Desist, 
anche se è chiaro che gli artisti non desiderano pagare avvocati o 
perdere tempo in questioni burocratiche, benchè spesso ne abbiano tratto 
grande visibilità.

Digital Freedoms è una giornata d'incontri che intende riunire alcuni 
tra i maggiori esponenti ed artefici della cultura elettronica e 
digitale italiana. L'intento è quello di far convergere teorici, 
esperti, attivisti ed artisti sotto un unica data, per presentare e 
discutere le novità più significative del settore. Al centro 
dell'attenzione viene collocata l'essenza del far cultura, politica e 
comunicazione attraverso i nuovi media, mantenendo saldo e fermo lo 
spirito di libertà che per decenni li ha caratterizzati. Coordinatori 
della giornata un comitato d'eccelleza Luigi Pagliarini (Artificialia), 
Simona Lodi (Piemonte Share), Arturo Di Corinto (FHF), Filippo Martorana 
(Linux club), Oriana Persico e Salvatore Iaconesi (Art is Open Source).

“Cease & Desist Art: yes, this is illegal!”

Da diversi anni a questa parte è diventata pratica comune tra gli 
artisti digitali dedicarsi all’arte illegale. Non si contano più le 
lettere di Cease & Desist inviate dalle aziende entrate nel mirino di 
pirati, plagiaristi, hacker e disturbatori che vengono mostrate come 
trofei nelle mostre, nelle community e divulgate nelle mailing list. 
Azioni artistiche che promuovono forme controverse di arte, usano le 
comunicazioni guerrilla per agire contro la legalità delle norme che 
regolano il diritto d’autore e la proprietà intellettuale.
Ottenere una lettera Cease & Desist è diventata una frontiera estetica 
da raggiungere per rivendicare la libertà di creare nell’Era delle 
Corporation. Ogni artista che ne voglia far parte sceglie un buon 
avvocato piuttosto che un buon gallerista. Cosa sta accadendo nel futuro 
dell’arte? Quali sono le libertà che questi artisti rivendicano? Tutto 
ciò ha a che fare con la fine delle tecno utopie?
In che modo il business si è appropriato del sistema di valori hacker, 
sfruttando l’open source, le libertà e uguaglianza e scatenando queste 
pratiche?

Digital Freedoms is a day of meetings that will reunite together leaders 
and creators of the italian digital and electronic culture. The intent 
is to bring together theorists, experts, activists and artists for a 
single date, to present and discuss the most important updates of this 
sector. The core theme of the day is the essence of culture, politics 
and communication throughout new medias, always keeping straight and 
firm the spirit of freedom that characterized them for decades. As 
coordinators of the day, a committee of excellence, Luigi Pagliarini 
(Artificialia), Simona Lodi (Piemonte Share), Arturo Di Corinto (FHF), 
Filippo Martorana (Linux club), Oriana Persico and Salvatore Iaconesi 
(Art is Open Source).

For some years now, it has become common among digital artists to focus 
on illegal art practices. Countless Cease & Desist letters have been 
sent out by companies to pirates, plagiarists, hackers and disturbers, 
which are shown off as trophies in exhibitions, web communities and 
mailing lists. Action artists promote controversial forms of art, using 
guerilla tactics to protest against the fairness of copyright and 
intellectual property laws.
Receiving a Cease & Desist letter has become the latest badge in 
championing the freedom to create in the Corporation Age. Any artist 
interested in taking part in the movement chooses a good lawyer rather 
than a good gallery owner. What is happening to the future of art? What 
rights and freedoms are these artists championing? Does all this have 
something to do with the end of techno-utopias?
In what way has business co-opted the values of hackers, exploiting open 
source initiatives, web freedom and on-line equality and sparking the 
use of these practices?

Bio
Simona Lodi, art critic and curator, was born in Alessandria and 
currently lives in Turin. Since 1993 she has been a contributor to 
various leading contemporary art journals. Simona's professional career 
spans New York, London and Turin - a city that has embraced the world of 
new technology and communication. It is in this context that the Share 
Festival - Art in the Digital Age, of which Simona is founder and Art 
Director, has found fertile ground to grow and develop.
